What is light therapy?

September 13, 2011

At Anthony’s Scrubs, we offer light therapy lamps, which can be used to treat a wide variety of medical and psychological conditions. Today, I’ll discuss light therapy and how it can be used. I’ll also show you the light therapy systems that we offer.

You may be familiar with light therapy as a treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD). People who suffer from SAD experience depression during certain times of the year, usually fall or winter, and they benefit from exposure to bright light. Light therapy (also referred to as phototherapy) is also used to treat a variety of other psychological and medical conditions, including:

  • Jet lag
  • Circadian rhythm disorders
  • Shift work sleep disorder
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • General depression
  • Parkinson’s disease

As long as you choose a light therapy device that filters out UV rays (ours do), light therapy poses few risks. Mild side effects can include headache, nausea, and eyestrain. For this reason, doctors often recommend light therapy to supplement other therapies or as an alternative to medications. For example, pregnant women who cannot take their depression medication may find light therapy to be an effective alternative.

If you’re interested in light therapy, you may want to work with your doctor to develop a treatment plan that works best for you. Generally, light therapy is done in the morning. You sit in close proximity to a light therapy lamp, usually for 30 minutes at a time. You can continue to work during treatment as long as you remain within close proximity to the light therapy box.

Day-Light Sky light therapy lampAt Medhooo, we offer two bright light therapy systems by Day-Light: the Day-Light Classic and the Day-Light Sky. What’s the difference? The Day-Light Classic is ideal for home use, and it can be used with or without the legs. The Day-Light Sky can be used at home or at the office, and when you’re not using it as a light therapy device, you can use it as a regular task light. It’s smaller than the Day-Light Classic. Both items have a 10,000 LUX field of illumination and block over 99% of UV rays.

Thanks for reading the Medhooo blog! Please visit our site for light therapy lamps as well as thousands of other products that help make your day a little brighter! Have a great day.

The 5 things you need in your medicine cabinet

September 6, 2011

At Medhooo, we sell to medical professionals as well as the general public. We carry a lot of specialized medical equipment (even used ambulances!) but we also sell basic supplies. Today, I’m going to show you some products that are good to have in your medicine cabinet. You probably already have the basics- bandages, antibiotic ointment, ice packs, and a thermometer, to name a few. So I won’t waste your time with those! Instead, I’m going to focus on useful products that you probably don’t already have.

3M Nexcare all purpose maskAn all-purpose mask: An all-purpose mask can be useful in many situations. It can help protect an immunocompromised person from germs. Conversely, it can help prevent a sick person from contaminating others. Wearing a mask can help warm and moisten the air, making it easier to breathe. And a mask can help keep you safe when you’re doing work around the house. It can help shield you from dangerous fumes when painting or working with chemicals, and protect you from allergens when you’re cleaning or working in the yard. The 3M Nexcare all purpose mask filters 99% of exhaled airborne bacteria, and comes in a box of five or sixty.

4.5" magnifying splinter forcepYou probably already have a pair of tweezers, but you can save those for your eyebrows. These 4.5″ forceps feature a magnifying glass, making it easy to spot what you want to grab, and the sharp points help you pull out even the tiniest splinters.

Good Sense Epsom saltI’m sure you have dozens of bottles and boxes of medications, each of which is good for one specific thing. Most likely, these will pass their expiration date before you ever use them all. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a cure-all that would never go to waste? There may not be a cure-all, but Epsom salt is probably as close to one as you’ll find. This naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate can do some pretty amazing things for your health, including relieving pain, reducing inflammation, improving circulation, lowering blood pressure, making insulin more effective, and relieving constipation. Best of all, many of these benefits can be enjoyed simply by taking an Epsom salt bath, as both magnesium and sulfate are readily absorbed by the skin. At Medhooo, we sell four-pound packages of Epsom salt for just $6.18!

Invacare Detachol adhesive removerRemoving a bandage is a universally unpleasant phenomenon, dreaded by even the most pain-tolerant individuals. It is like a form of torture that you must inflict upon yourself. And when you’re injured and in pain, you are more sensitive to pain, making the situation even worse. Why put yourself through that? Hasn’t your injury been painful enough? Detachol is an amazing product that helps you more easily remove bandages, dressings, wound closure strips, tapes, tubes, and liquid adhesives. It is latex-free and hypoallergenic, and it contains no ether, alcohol, chloroform, or benzene.

ACULIFE deluxe pill box splitterDoctors often advise patients to cut pills in half, but that’s not always easy to do. Pills can crumble as you attempt to cut them, and if you’re taking a pricey medication, this is not acceptable. Cutting pills with a knife can also be very dangerous, and you can seriously injure yourself if the knife slips. The ACULIFE pill splitter makes it easy to cut pills, and it keeps your hands safe.

Great gift ideas for nursing students

August 22, 2011

As we speak, young people across the country are embarking upon their college careers. Starting college is an exciting but stressful time, and I can imagine that it’s especially nerve-racking for kids beginning their freshman year during this period of economic uncertainty. There’s always a lot of pressure to pick the “right” major, but now, choosing a major probably feels like a huge gamble. There’s no way to know where the jobs will be in four years, but kids and their parents are investing large amounts of money in education and hoping for the best.

Although news reports may sometimes seem to indicate otherwise, I strongly believe that nursing is an excellent career choice. Despite an occasional surplus of nurses, the career outlook for nurses is usually very good. I expect that nurses will become increasingly more in demand as our population of overweight and obese individuals grows older and experiences health complications. And as certain diseases like AIDS and cancer become more treatable, people will be living longer, but with a greater need for ongoing medical treatment.

If you have a child, friend or family member just starting out in nursing school, send a little encouragement their way and let them know how proud you are of their decision to pursue such a challenging and important career path. Today, I’ll give you a few great gift ideas for nursing students.

Littmann Classic II, S.E. chocolateLittmann is the name to know when it comes to stethoscopes, and you can be the first to introduce the nursing student in your life to this respected brand. Littmann stethoscopes come in a variety of colors, including the chocolate color shown. This rich color is complemented by an elegant copper chestpiece, making this stethoscope an absolutely beautiful gift. This high-quality stethoscope will last throughout nursing school and beyond.

Nurse Mates Bryar slip-on shoes in leopardNursing school requires long hours of hard work, but it’s important for nursing students to have a little fun! These leopard patent leather slip-ons from Nurse Mates are cute and lighthearted, but the way they’re built is all business. They are slip-resistant and stain-resistant, and the comfortable shock-absorbing design will keep even the most exhausted nursing student on her toes.

Nancy Nurse Bear by Prestige MedicalTimes have changed, and being a freshman in college today is much different than it was even just ten years ago. Most kids these days head to school with a webcam-enabled laptop, allowing them to Skype with mom and dad whenever they’re feeling homesick. However, there’s still no replacement for a good, old-fashioned care package, and the Nancy Nurse bear by Prestige Medical makes the perfect care package companion. There’s also a scrub-wearing bear if you prefer.

Urbane fleece jacketSending a child to college for the first time can be very scary. You worry about her physical and emotional well-being. You worry about everything from whether she’s eating well to how well you prepared her to do her own laundry. The worry can keep you up at night. Give her (and yourself) a little comfort with this fleece warm-up by Urbane. The classic cardigan style and satin trim ensure that she’ll actually wear it, so you can cross one worry off your list.

These are just a few of the great gifts we offer. Browse Medhooo.com for more gift ideas!
